General Contractor Goes Beyond the Spreadsheet to a Digital One-Stop Shop
The Challenge
Supporting people in the field and office is important—especially to McCownGordon Construction, a forward-thinking general contractor based in Kansas City, Missouri. However, the growing business had a single user managing its workforce spreadsheet and spent countless hours in meetings trying to navigate the cumbersome document.
The Solution
Already a longtime Procore customer, the tech-savvy GC decided to find a digital solution for their workforce management. Enter Procore Workforce Planning, the cloud-based platform that replaced their spreadsheets—and so much more.
The Results
“When you need to dump the spreadsheet, it’s too late. You need to look forward and say, ‘How are we going to manage this process in the future versus today?”

Innovative General Contractor Outgrows the Spreadsheet
McCownGordon Construction is an employee-owned construction firm headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri with offices in Manhattan, Kansas, Wichita, Kansas, and Dallas-Ft. Worth. Founded by Pat McCown and Brett Gordon in 1999, the company is made up of nearly 600 employees today. From healthcare, industrial, and civic to corporate, K-12, and more, McCownGordon builds across a variety of markets.
The high-growth GC was moving forward as a business, but struggled to effectively manage their workforce from a single-user spreadsheet. McCownGordon recognized they had outgrown the usual spreadsheet solution for workforce planning and wanted to solve the issue with the right technology.
Their leadership and the business solutions teams listened to the challenges their associates were facing and knew there had to be a better way to get the right people on the right projects at the right time. Prioritizing their people-first approach, they sought out a method to improve communication, obtain accurate forecasting, and plan for staffing on future projects. They found Procore Workforce Planning to do all that and more.
“Workforce Planning is a really efficient way for us to help manage our workforce in the field and make sure the right people are in the right place at the right time,” says Sheri Johnson, Senior Vice President, Marketing.
