Project Story

Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Linear Park

New Orlean's bridge

A high-traffic thoroughfare near New Orleans’ historic riverfront—reimagined into an accessible promenade.

New Orleans’ riverfront has a rich history of trade and commerce, but it lacked pedestrian access. As the city worked to revitalize the riverfront, Ernest N. Morial Convention Center saw an opportunity to be part of the solution. Landis Construction, no stranger to challenging rehabilitations in the historic city, was selected to reduce a 1-mile-plus stretch of Convention Center Blvd. from four to two lanes, and to construct a linear pedestrian park in the freed-up space. The job required a significant amount of preconstruction collaboration with private and public stakeholders—both the Convention Center and the many hotels fronting the affected stretch of Convention Center Blvd., would stay open throughout the course of construction. In addition to the road and park construction, the scope of work also included building an all-new transit center for the Convention Center, and moving a major electrical transmission line feeding a significant part of the City. The Landis team had to navigate unforeseen conditions like old underground utilities and brickwork, all while ensuring minimum disturbance to the community. Today, the Linear Park carries on the riverfront legacy, allowing the next generation of locals and visitors alike to enjoy New Orleans on foot.

To successfully manage this civil infrastructure project, Landis relied on Procore as the backbone of all project information. Beginning in the considerable preconstruction phase, Landis used Procore to keep teams apprised not only of the latest drawings, but also the latest logistical planning around things like traffic control and ingress/egress. “One of our biggest challenges was keeping ingress and egress open to the Convention Center and the half-dozen hotels that fronted the project,” said Sarah Busch, Vice President of Operations at Landis Construction.

Landis was using Procore as their single source of truth for the project, which became essential when communicating important information to the Owner. “We had stakeholders like the Convention Center Sales team who were booking events and holding events while we were under construction,” said Busch. The Landis team was able to easily share information about what work zones would be active, or how ingress and egress would be affected at any given time. “When they started to realize that we had all this incredible information that would benefit them housed in Procore, they were like, ‘Yeah, we want in!’” said Busch. Landis was able to open parts of their project file in Procore Documents for the Owner to access.

Landis also leveraged Procore’s Locations feature, dividing up the mile-long job into distinct work zones within Procore so that field teams could easily access and enter information relevant to where they were actually standing. “It’s a huge usability feature for our teams because it organizes the information around the job, instead of the other way around,” said Busch.

Thanks to their deep experience, expert teams—and a great technology partner in Procore—Landis was able to exceed expectations despite the difficulties and even finished ahead of schedule.

Suddenly, it starts to feel like there's actually one team. Everybody has the information to be effective. And nobody's working extra hours to make that happen.
